Endurance Training with Seniors
Endurance training helps to reduce morbidity and functional decline in old age. The aim of physical training is to maintain a good level of performance that is sufficient for a self-determined life into old age. Performance during training is not a sporting peak performance, but individual performance to maintain or restore health. Endurance training is therefore an intervention that has a decisive positive influence on quality of life in old age.
In this unit, participants learn about the physiological effects of endurance training, which affect both the body and the mind. In the practical part of the unit, age-appropriate tests to determine performance are first presented. Subsequently, the test results will be used to determine training areas and to plan and implement target group-specific training interventions. Possible problems and limitations such as illnesses or chronic complaints are also taken into account.

Pelvic Floor Training (SEN)
As we get older, the elasticity and resilience of our muscles decreases. A weaker pelvic floor muscle system means that the bladder and bowel are no longer supported as well.
Good pelvic floor muscles are therefore important to improve bladder continence and bowel permeability. The pelvic floor is a horizontal muscle plate in the lower pelvis that extends from the pubic bone to the sacrum and coccyx and laterally to the ischial tuberosities. The pelvic floor holds our internal organs together and helps us to maintain our posture.
A strong pelvic floor is therefore important for our health and well-being. Exercise can strengthen the muscles and improve posture. Sexual performance can also be improved by training the pelvic floor.

In the pelvic floor training unit of the senior trainer course, course participants learn about the muscular structure of the pelvic floor, its function and problems with poorly trained pelvic floor muscles in old age.
The importance of pelvic floor training for the health of men and women in old age is also discussed. In the practical part, exercises for a strong pelvic floor are presented and demonstrated.

At the beginning of the training, the main difficulty lies in being able to perceive and specifically target the muscles of the pelvic floor. For this reason, different exercise variations are shown and learned while sitting, lying down, kneeling or standing.

Agility and mobility training
In addition to a decrease in muscle strength and muscle mass, mobility also decreases with age. Sufficient mobility is the basis for moving freely and unhindered and mastering everyday life with as little difficulty as possible. In the unit on improving flexibility and mobility, participants learn about different methods for improving flexibility and how these can be combined and applied to benefit the client. Our body must be seen as a three-dimensional system in which everything is connected to everything else.
This means that far more factors than just the ability to stretch the muscles are decisive for mobility and that, for example, body awareness and overall sensorimotor skills also play a major role in the quality of movement. In the practical part, various target group-specific static and dynamic stretching methods, fascia training and mobilization exercises for the spine are presented and carried out. Every movement is difficult, especially in cases of acute pain and tension. Here in particular, targeted mobilization exercises can provide initial relief and noticeably increase well-being and vitality. The main focus here is on the correct approach and sensible application of the various methods for improving mobility in senior citizens. Overall, the course participants receive a package on how they can use the various measures to improve their clients range of motion and quality of movement.

Functional movement analysis for seniors
In the Functional Movement Analysis unit, participants learn the reasons why everyday routines, previous injuries, illnesses and increasing age have an impact on mobility, stability and connective tissue and subsequently lead to dysfunction of movement sequences. With the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), participants learn about a tool with which a trainer can uncover existing deficits, correct them and thus improve the clients performance and quality of life. The Functional Movement Screen covers fundamental movement patterns, motor control within movement patterns and the execution of basic, non-sport-specific movements.
This movement test can be used to assess mobility and stability in the ankle, knee, hip, shoulder joint and spine, as well as neuromuscular control. The FMS comprises 7 fundamental movement patterns that make it possible to identify weaknesses, imbalances, asymmetries and restrictions.
In the practical part, the FMS is performed and assessed by everyone. On the one hand, this uncovers possible deficits and, on the other, the participants can train their eyes by assessing each other.
Finally, the test results are used to recognize weaknesses, identify corrective patterns and integrate these into a targeted training cycle.

Health benefits of training
In the health benefits of exercise unit, the increasing lack of physical activity in all age groups and the effects on health as well as the economic consequences are first discussed. Subsequently, the health-promoting effects of physical activity are presented in relation to the most common diseases in industrialized nations.
These are primarily cardiovascular diseases, cancer, obesity, diabetes mellitus type II, but general physical diseases such as osteoporosis or sarcopenia are also addressed. Various studies show how physical activity can reduce the risk of falling ill or positively influence the course of an existing disease. In this context, course participants learn the characteristic signs of illness and specific exercise recommendations to promote health.

Coordination training
In addition to strength, coordination plays a central role in all movements and movement safety. Coordination involves information reception (sensory function), information processing and storage as well as information conversion (sensorimotor function).
With increasing age and usually accompanying illnesses and lack of exercise, coordination skills also decline. The ability to balance and react are particularly important for gait safety and reducing the risk of falling. Targeted coordination training optimizes and automates movements.
In this unit, participants learn about general methods of coordination training and how to build them up methodically.
In the practical part, the main focus is on exercises for movement coordination, balance and reaction time. Care is also taken to create a broad pool of exercises for everyday use. In other words, exercises that are easy to integrate into everyday life and can be performed at any time, even without additional equipment. The exercises are also categorized according to difficulty. From simple balance exercises on a stable surface to sensorimotor courses, all age groups and ability levels are catered for.

Strength training with large machines
Strength - or more precisely muscle strength - is a prerequisite for all human movement, especially for sport. It has long been known that targeted strength training already has significant positive effects. The increase in strength is primarily due to the improvement in intra- and inter-muscular coordination.

In general, it can be assumed that under normal living conditions, the skeletal muscles of healthy adults begin to lose performance after the 2nd to 3rd decade of life. The loss of skeletal muscle mass is the most noticeable change in skeletal muscle. It begins around the mid-twenties. By the age of 80, around 50% of muscle mass has been lost.

Strength training with large machines is ideal for building muscle and improving general health, which can usually be found in a gym. We show how these can be used effectively and safely for older people.

In this section of the senior trainer course, we focus specifically on the large machines. Equipment-assisted strength training is very popular with newcomers to strength training as well as senior citizens and rehabilitation patients. It also has many advantages over training with small equipment. The equipment guides the trainee precisely in the correct execution of exercises and isolates the individual muscle groups. This means that even beginners in weight training can work on a specific muscle group and be sure that the exercises are performed correctly, as there is less room for error with large equipment.

It is also more effective as the exercises can be performed with more weight and in a wider range. Participants learn the correct technique for performing all exercises on the equipment, they are confronted with the most common mistakes and can train older people on the equipment flawlessly after the training.

Strength training with small equipment
There are many different ways to train strength, but in this module of the Senior Trainer Course, we will focus on strength training with small equipment.

Small equipment provides a great way to strengthen the body while also being gentle on the joints. They are also perfect for sports enthusiasts who prefer not to train in a gym.

They are an essential component of an effective training program for older adults. Training with fitness small equipment not only promotes physical but also mental abilities. These can be used for sensory-motor training, coordination training, and strength training, offering a good space-saving and cost-effective alternative to traditional machine and dumbbell training.

They are versatile and can be well adapted to the needs of older adults. They can be used, for example, for high-intensity training, but also for endurance-focused training.

Some of the benefits of training with small equipment include stimulating bone and joint metabolism, strengthening muscles, and improving endurance. Additionally, they can improve balance and promote flexibility. All of these benefits are important for the health and well-being of older adults.

During the course, various fitness small equipment will be introduced, and participants will have the opportunity to instruct each other with different exercises using the equipment. It is important that the exercises are performed correctly to achieve their effectiveness. Participants will learn in the module what to consider with the respective equipment and how to best use them for various objectives in senior training.

Strength training outdoor
In todays world, physical activity in daily life is becoming increasingly rare, which naturally has negative effects on independence in old age. Therefore, it is important to reintroduce people to fun, joy, and safety in outdoor movement to motivate them to compensate for their sedentary lifestyles. In this session, course participants learn to optimally supervise seniors in outdoor activities. In addition to strength exercises with resistance bands, the focus of this session is on training with natural obstacles. Participants learn how to bring the gym outdoors and perform targeted strengthening exercises for the whole body using various obstacles and objects. By adjusting levers, angles, or obstacles, the training can be adapted to each individuals fitness level. It is important to pay attention to the conditions and potential hazards that outdoor training entails.

Core stability training on unstable surfaces
Low muscle mass and lack of strength in the core muscles are a major cause of back pain, which subsequently leads to restricted movement and lack of physical activity. This has a significant impact on independence and quality of life, especially in older age. Building on the unit of core stability training on stable surfaces, the focus of this session is on using various unstable surfaces such as balance cushions, exercise balls, or suspension trainers to improve core strength and stability. Additionally, various exercise variations for the ventral, dorsal, and lateral chain will be demonstrated along with the methodical approach. Furthermore, participants will be encouraged to independently plan training sessions for core strengthening and then lead, guide, and correct them with the group.

Core stability training on stable surfaces
Low muscle mass and strength in the core muscles are a primary cause of back pain, which subsequently leads to movement restrictions and a lack of physical activity. This has a significant impact on independence and quality of life, especially in older age. Core muscle strength also plays a crucial role in movement quality and gait safety. Therefore, the goal should be to strengthen the muscles, particularly the abdominal and back muscles. Based on improved body awareness, targeted strengthening exercises can be implemented as early as possible. In this session, the methodical approach to core stabilization exercises for seniors targeting the ventral, dorsal, and lateral chain will be demonstrated. It will illustrate how exercises can be progressively intensified or modified by altering angles, leverage, support surface, or adding weights.

Specialized nutrition in older age
In addition to movement and targeted training, adequate nutrition also contributes to health and the enhancement of physical well-being. The nutrition of elderly people requires special attention since they have specific nutritional needs due to changes in body composition , age-related diseases, and medication intake. Due to the altered body composition, the energy requirement decreases with increasing age. However, the need for nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins remains unchanged high. Therefore, to ensure seniors can meet their nutrient needs despite reduced food intake, careful selection of foods with high nutrient density is necessary.

The intake of food should therefore be rich in nutrients to ensure an adequate supply of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It is important to consume enough protein to slow down the loss of muscle mass and maintain physical function. Calcium and vitamin D are essential for strong bones, while vitamin B12 is needed for the normal function of the nervous system. Adequate fluid intake is also important to avoid dehydration and associated health problems. A balanced breakfast can help start the day with energy and promote appetite throughout the day.

Course participants learn about the correct nutrient distribution and targeted supplementation in old age to counteract malnutrition. In addition, mitochondrial health is also discussed and how antioxidants, free radicals, or AGEs affect the bodys cells and the aging process.

Special Physiology and Pathology (SEN)
Throughout our lives, we go through various stages of physiology. Theres puberty, during which we undergo physical and hormonal changes. In our fertile phase, we can conceive children. And as we age, various physical changes occur, ultimately leading us to death.

Special Physiology and Pathology is a subject taught as part of the Senior Trainer Training. We focus on the aspects of anatomy and physiology relevant to training older adults, to understand the reasons for health problems and how they can be countered with exercise and movement. We will examine how the body changes from the age of 30 and which training interventions can be specifically tailored to it.

Topics covered include age-specific changes and processes in the sensory organs, musculoskeletal system, and hormone balance, as well as their effects on posture and gait. This knowledge is important for our participants to know and greatly advantageous, as it enables them to understand the causes of diseases and injuries and thus better prevent or counteract them.

As people age, their heart rate decreases, the heart becomes larger and weaker, and the circulation of the heart and blood vessels deteriorates. The likelihood of suffering from heart diseases increases with age. Its important to keep the cardiovascular system fit to reduce the risk of diseases.

Understanding these physiological changes is crucial for conducting targeted training interventions. Special attention is paid to metabolic diseases such as gout, diabetes, and weight problems in old age.

Fall prevention

According to the definition, a fall (Sturz) refers to a sudden, uncontrolled, unintentional descent of the body from lying, sitting, or standing to a lower level. Unfortunately, both the frequency and consequences of falls increase with age. Falls in older adults are by far the most common cause of injuries and the leading cause of accident-related deaths. The reasons for this are varied, ranging from declining sensory organs to coordination impairments and muscular deficits.

In the unit on fall prevention, the causes of increasing fall risk are thoroughly explained, and measures are presented to help reduce the risk of falls and positively influence gait, posture, coordination, and strength. Targeted training is particularly important for seniors, as it helps maintain autonomy and subsequently, quality of life. Participants also learn about tests for assessing fall risk and the methodical development of different training focuses in fall prevention.

Training for various clinical pictures (SEN)

In our unit "Training for Specific Medical Conditions" of the Senior Trainer Training, participants learn about various medical conditions that occur more frequently with advancing age. Initially, the course covers the peculiarities of working with seniors and the changes in bodily function systems as the body ages.

Subsequently, exercises are developed collaboratively to assist with typical medical conditions.

The number of older adults is increasing worldwide. This also means that the number of people with age-related illnesses is rising. These illnesses can affect various areas of the body and significantly impact the quality of life of those affected. Some of these illnesses include: arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimers, and Parkinsons. Illnesses influence our daily lives and often our ability to engage in regular exercise. This is especially true for older individuals who often suffer from one or more chronic illnesses. For fitness studios and trainers, this means they must increasingly address the issue of illnesses and develop the appropriate training methods for their older clientele.

Physical inactivity is a significant risk factor for many chronic illnesses, particularly those of the musculoskeletal system. The passive musculoskeletal system includes bones, tendons, ligaments, and joints. Changes in the passive musculoskeletal system often occur in older people, such as claw toes, bow legs, or age-related kyphosis. These changes can limit a persons mobility and cause pain.

Emphasis is also placed on the methodological approach and age-appropriate instructions. Through targeted training, older adults can improve their mobility and alleviate pain.

Many people suffer from one or more of these conditions and seek ways to improve their health. Fitness is an important component of health and a major factor in the prevention and treatment of illnesses. Medical conditions can be improved through regular and specific training.

Its essential for participants in the unit to receive a clear guide on how to conduct training interventions for the respective medical conditions. Of course, participants are also informed about contraindications.

Training theory, especially senior training

In this subject of the Senior Fitness Trainer , we will focus on the specific training and adaptation processes in older individuals.

Throughout our lives, our physical abilities change. This is a natural process characterized by the loss of muscle mass, bone density, endurance, and flexibility. Although these changes are inevitable, they can be slowed down through regular exercise.

However, for older adults, it can be challenging to adhere to a regular exercise program. This is due to several factors, including reduced motivation, lower physical performance, and a higher likelihood of injuries. Targeted exercise can help reduce these challenges.

More and more older adults are interested in exercising regularly and staying fit. Its essential that the training is specifically tailored to the needs of older individuals. For those opting for regular strength training in later years, its expected that their bodies will respond differently to stimuli compared to younger individuals. However, there are some principles that apply to training for all age groups and are also significant for older adults. Additionally, the general trainability of seniors is compared to that of young people, and the specifics of training are outlined.

Strength, coordination, and endurance training for seniors is an effective method to improve physical performance. Training not only enhances motor skills but also cognitive abilities.

Furthermore, overall health is improved, and the risk of falls is reduced. Participants will learn about the training goals to pursue, which training content and methods are most suitable for older individuals, and what to pay special attention to during training.
